The Arade riverside is the level, open edge of Silves, where the town meets the river that once carried its trade to the sea. After the climb through the old streets and up to the castle, the riverside offers an easy, flat counterpoint, and it is where much of the town's daily life is now found.
A promenade follows the bank, planted with trees and set with benches, cafés and small restaurants. From here the view runs up to the red mass of the castle on its hill, a vantage point much used by photographers in the soft light of late afternoon. The medieval bridge, the Ponte Velha, closes the scene at one end of the walk.
For centuries the Arade was the reason Silves mattered, navigable inland from the coast and linking the Algarve's interior to the sea.
