Silves sits on a hill above the River Arade, surrounded by orange groves. Under the Moors it was Xelb, the capital of the Algarve and a centre of poets and scholars. Its red sandstone castle, the best preserved in the region, still dominates the town, and the narrow streets below make a lovely half-day away from the coast.
What to see
Walk the walls of Silves Castle, with its cisterns and views over the valley. Just below, the Gothic cathedral stands on the site of the old mosque. The Archaeology Museum is built around a deep Moorish cistern-well. Stroll down to the Arade riverside and the old bridge, lined with cafés. On the edge of town, the carved stone Cruz de Portugal is a rare 16th-century cross. In August, the Medieval Fair fills the streets.
