The Silves Municipal Archaeology Museum is arranged around an unusual centrepiece: an Almohad cistern-well, sunk into the bedrock and reached by a vaulted spiral staircase. The well descends to groundwater some eighteen metres below, and water is still seen at its base throughout the year.
The museum was created to display the finds recovered from excavations across Silves and its surroundings. Its galleries follow the long sequence of human presence in the area, from prehistoric and Iron Age objects through Roman material and on to the rich Islamic collection for which the town is best known. Ceramics, coins, glass and architectural fragments give a clear picture of daily life in the medieval city.
The cistern-well itself, built from the same red sandstone as the castle, was abandoned after the Christian conquest and only rediscovered in 1979 during municipal works. Because the museum is small and clearly laid out, it is easily combined with a visit to the castle a short walk uphill, and it adds useful context to the wider monuments of Silves.

History & context
The cistern-well at the heart of the museum was dug in the twelfth century to supply the lower town of medieval Silves, probably serving nearby public baths. After the Reconquest it fell out of use and was filled with rubble. The structure came to light again in 1979 when the municipality was carrying out building work, and the museum was subsequently created around it, opening in 1990 to gather and display the archaeological heritage of the town and its territory.
