Vila Real is the largest city in Trás-os-Montes, set on a gorge above the River Corgo with the Marão and Alvão mountains behind it. It is a lively university town and a handy base for the northern Douro Valley, which begins just south of the city.
What to see
Just outside the centre, the baroque Mateus Palace, the house on the famous rosé label, has elegant rooms, a mirror lake and formal gardens. In town, see the Gothic cathedral, the tiled São Pedro church and the house where the navigator Diogo Cão was born. In the village of Bisalhães, potters still make black pottery fired in pits, a craft listed by UNESCO. Nature lovers can head to the Alvão Natural Park and its waterfalls.
