Faro is the capital of the Algarve and, thanks to its airport, the first stop for most visitors to southern Portugal. Many go straight to the beaches, but the city rewards a stop: a quiet walled old town, a lively centre and the lagoons of the Ria Formosa right on its doorstep.
What to see
Enter the old town through the Arco da Vila or the Arco do Repouso and walk up to the cathedral, whose tower offers views over the rooftops and the lagoon. Take a boat trip into the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a maze of channels and islands rich in birdlife, or spend an afternoon on Praia de Faro. A few kilometres inland, the Roman ruins of Milreu are among the most important in Portugal.
