Plan your visit: the sights of Loulé, what to eat and where to stay.

Loulé travel guide

Loulé is a busy market town a few kilometres inland from the coast, in the heart of the Algarve. It has kept its traditions: craftsmen still work copper and leather in the old streets, and the market draws people from all around. The municipality also includes some of the Algarve's best-known resorts, Vilamoura, Quarteira and Quinta do Lago.

What to see

Start at the Loulé Market, a neo-Moorish building with red domes, full of fruit, fish, cheese and local crafts; on Saturdays a large open-air market spreads around it. Walk to the castle walls and the old town, see the São Clemente church with its former minaret bell tower, and the remains of the Islamic baths. Just outside town, the small São Lourenço church in Almancil is entirely lined with blue tiles. On the coast, Vilamoura Marina is the place for boats, restaurants and golf.

What to eat

Loulé's cooking looks to the hills: try lamb cataplana, sweets made with almond and fig, carob cake and honey from the Serra do Caldeirão. Fish and seafood come from Quarteira, 10 minutes away.

Nearby

Faro and its airport are 20 minutes away, Albufeira about 30 minutes, and Tavira 40 minutes east.
