Figueira da Foz is a seaside town where the River Mondego meets the Atlantic, west of Coimbra. Since the 19th century it has been one of Portugal's favourite summer resorts, known for its enormous beach, its casino and its lively summer nights. Out of season it is calm and good value.
What to see
The Claridade beach is so wide that boardwalks lead across the sand to the sea. Walk the promenade to the 16th-century Santa Catarina Fort at the river mouth, and north to the old fishing village of Buarcos, with its sea wall and fort. Continue to Cabo Mondego for cliffs, a lighthouse and fossil-rich rocks. Across the river, the Salt Museum shows traditional salt making in working salt pans. In the evening, the historic casino is a landmark.

Order arroz de marisco made with Carolino rice grown in the Mondego valley, and a fish caldeirada. The local sweets are brisas da Figueira, made with eggs and almonds, and broa doce, a corn and pumpkin sweet bread.
