Lamego sits in the hills just south of the Douro, a short drive from Peso da Régua. It is one of the oldest towns in Portugal, with a cathedral, a castle and some fine baroque buildings, and it is famous across the country for its pilgrimage sanctuary and its huge decorated stairway.
What to see
The highlight is the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, reached by a baroque stairway of almost 700 steps with tiled landings, fountains and statues. Climb it or drive to the top and walk down. In the centre, visit the cathedral, with its Gothic tower, and the Lamego Museum, rich in tapestries, paintings and gilded chapels. Look for the small Romanesque Almacave church and the medieval castle. Just outside town, Balsemão Chapel is one of the oldest churches in Portugal.
What to eat
Lamego is known for its presunto, cured ham, and for bola de Lamego, bread baked with ham and other meats. The hills to the south make some of Portugal's best sparkling wines (Távora-Varosa), and the Douro wines are all around.
