Matosinhos sits on the coast just north of Porto, around the fishing harbour of Leixões. It is where people from Porto come to eat fish: a whole street of restaurants grills the day's catch on charcoal outside the door. Add a wide beach, a lively surf scene and some landmark modern architecture, and it is well worth a visit.
What to see
Walk along Matosinhos Beach to the Anémona, the giant net sculpture over the roundabout. In Leça da Palmeira, swim in the tide pools designed by Álvaro Siza among the rocks, and continue to Siza's Boa Nova Tea House, built into the shoreline. Visit the Municipal Market for fish and produce, and the Casa da Arquitectura, an architecture centre in a former cannery.
