Mértola rises on a rocky spur where the River Oeiras meets the Guadiana, in the south-east Alentejo. It was a Roman river port and an important Islamic town, and so much of its past survives that it is known as a "museum town". Its church, a former mosque, is one of the most remarkable buildings in Portugal.
What to see
Climb to the castle for the view over the river and the white houses. Below it, the main church was a 12th-century mosque and still has its mihrab. Visit the Islamic Art Museum and the other sites of the museum town. Enjoy the Guadiana viewpoint from the old walls. Out of town, see the abandoned São Domingos mine and its red landscapes, and the Pulo do Lobo, a dramatic waterfall in the Guadiana Valley park.
