Serpa stands on a low hill east of the Guadiana, its whitewashed houses still enclosed by medieval walls. It is a slow, authentic Alentejo town, where old men sing cante alentejano (UNESCO heritage) in the cafés, and its name is known all over Portugal for Serpa cheese.
What to see
Enter the old town through the Beja gate and climb to the castle, with its collapsed tower and views over the olive groves. Next to it stands the church of Santa Maria, and in the main square the clock tower. Follow the walls to the aqueduct, with its great water wheel beside the Ficalho palace. The ethnographic museum shows the crafts and rural life of the region.
