Beja is in the Alentejo region of Portugal, about 174 km from Lisbon Airport.
Plan your visit: the sights of Beja, what to eat and where to stay.
Beja, the Roman Pax Julia, rises above the golden wheat plains of the Lower Alentejo. It is a calm, authentic city of white houses, convents and squares, far from the tourist crowds. Its castle keep, one of the tallest in Portugal, can be seen from miles around.
Climb the 40-metre castle keep for a view over the plains. Visit the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, now the Regional Museum, with a richly tiled cloister and the story of the nun Mariana Alcoforado, author of the famous "Portuguese Letters". The small church of Santo Amaro houses a museum of Visigothic art. Walk to the cathedral, through the old Mértola gate and into the shady public garden. Outside town, the Roman villa of Pisões has mosaics and baths.
Try lamb ensopado, migas with marinated pork, porco à alentejana and sericaia. The Lower Alentejo produces excellent olive oil and wine.
Évora is an hour north, and the Alqueva lake and Monsaraz about an hour east.
