For centuries it guarded Portugal's border, and its ring of star-shaped walls, bastions and forts is the largest system of bulwarked fortifications in the world, listed by UNESCO. What to see
Drive up to Forte da Graça, an 18th-century hilltop fortress with a remarkable design and views over the plain. Follow the Amoreira aqueduct, which runs for over 7 km with arches up to 30 m high. Walk through the historic centre to Praça da República, with its geometric paving and the former cathedral. See the star-shaped Santa Luzia fort, and visit the Military Museum in the old barracks.
