Estremoz is a hilltop market town in central Alentejo, built largely from the white marble quarried in the surrounding plains. Its compact medieval centre, strong ceramic tradition and unhurried pace make it a rewarding stop for travellers exploring inland Portugal away from the more frequented heritage circuits.
What to see and do
The upper town is anchored by the Torre das Três Coroas and the former royal palace, now operating as a Pousada, which together mark Estremoz's long role as a fortified stronghold on the Spanish border. The Rossio Marquês de Pombal, the main square below, has been the site of the town's weekly market for centuries and remains the social centre of daily life. The Bonecos de Estremoz Interpretation Centre documents the town's distinctive hand-painted clay figurines, a craft recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. Food and regional character
Alentejo's cuisine is built on a few honest ingredients used with precision. In Estremoz, açorda alentejana — a bread soup with poached egg, garlic and coriander — and carne de porco à alentejana appear on most menus, alongside Enchidos alentejanos and Pão Alentejano baked in wood-fired ovens. Sericaia com ameixa de Elvas, a baked egg pudding served with preserved plums, is the classic dessert of the region.
