Estremoz is a white town in the heart of the Alentejo, built on the marble that is still quarried around it: even the pavements shine. The upper town, with its castle, sits on a hill above the large lower town and its great square, the Rossio. It is a good base for the marble triangle of Estremoz, Borba and Vila Viçosa.
What to see
Climb the Tower of the Three Crowns, the marble keep of the castle, for a view over the plain. Next to it, the Queen Saint Isabel chapel marks the place where the queen died in 1336. Down on the Rossio, one of Portugal's largest squares, the Saturday market sells everything from cheese to antiques. Visit the centre dedicated to the Bonecos de Estremoz, hand-painted clay figures listed by UNESCO, and see the nearby marble quarries.
