Plan your visit: the sights of Sines, what to eat and where to stay.

Sines travel guide

Sines is best known for its large port, but its old town, on a headland above a sandy bay, is a pleasant surprise. This is where Vasco da Gama was born, and his statue looks out to sea from the castle walls. South of town begins the wild Alentejo coast, with the white fishing village of Porto Covo and Pessegueiro Island.

What to see

Visit the castle, which houses the Vasco da Gama museum, and the statue of Vasco da Gama on the walls. Below, Vasco da Gama beach curves around the bay. The modern Sines Arts Centre hosts concerts and exhibitions, and every July the town fills with musicians from all over the world for the FMM Sines world music festival. Then drive 15 minutes south to Porto Covo and the Pessegueiro fort, facing a small island with the ruins of another fort.

What to eat

Sines is a fishing town: order seafood rice, grilled sardines in summer, a fish caldeirada and the Alentejo's coriander-scented dogfish soup.

Nearby

Santiago do Cacém is 20 minutes away, Grândola about 45 minutes, and the beaches of Odemira, including Vila Nova de Milfontes, about 35 minutes south.

Getting there

Sines is about 160 km from Lisbon Airport. GoToo drives you door to door at a fixed price per vehicle.
