Évora is the main city of the Alentejo, about an hour and a half east of Lisbon. Its historic centre, enclosed by walls and listed by UNESCO, is a pleasure to explore on foot: whitewashed houses trimmed in yellow, quiet squares, churches and two thousand years of history.
What to see
The Roman temple, with its Corinthian columns, stands at the top of the town next to the cathedral, whose roof terraces look out over the plain. The Chapel of Bones, in the Church of São Francisco, is unforgettable. Follow the arches of the Água de Prata aqueduct, sit in Praça do Giraldo and visit the cloister of the University of Évora. Just outside town, the Almendres Cromlech is one of the largest groups of standing stones in Europe.
